Media Players:

  • VLC media player
VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
  • FLV media player
A standalone player for viewing FLV files (Flash video)
  • XBMC media centre
Similar to windows own media centre only better and free! the new video format called .mkv is a HD format. really high quality video’s, however microsofts underequiped media centre does not play this format. Thank you very much, ‘biggest company in the world’
This media centre plays everything with a nice easy to use interface. Its available from sourceforge.net
  • Media Monkey
Music library software. Its free but it also has a paid version, but you don’t need that. The best thing about this software is that you can copy songs from your Ipod to your PC (A function that itunes does not allow.)

Audio recording Software

  • Audacity
Absolutely brilliant audio recording software. It supports multiple formats and allows you add effects, change pitch, etc. for a full list of features, Click here

Office Applications

  • OpenOffice.org
Forget Giving Microsoft $200 for the office suite. Download this fully functional office application, that is fully compatible with the Microsoft formats. It is made by Sun Microsystems (the people that bring you java.)

Image editing Software

  • GIMP Image Editor
Similar to Adobe Photoshop, This is a powerful and advanced image editing software that is 100% Free.
Not as easy to use as the Adobe version, but still fully functional and Free.

Operating Systems

  • Linux (Ubuntu)
Very user Friendly operating system. Great alternative to windows for older computers. (doesn’t use as much resources) Installable to your PC or can be run from the install disk. You can also have both windows and Linux installed on your computer. Install disk can also be used to access your computers files if windows becomes unresponsive and/or wont load. So if windows crashes, you can use this disk to backup all your data.
  • Solaris (Open Solaris)
Another highly powerful operating system from Sun Microsystems (Java & OpenOffice). Can be installed on your PC or can be run from the Live disk. Can also be used like Linux as explained above. I personally have not used Solaris myself, but I know that it is good and reliable.
